Overview

Growing up, one of my favorite movies to watch, along with star wars of course, was U-571. Upon reflection, its not that great of a movie but it did have one thing that I loved..the whole movie was about stealing a coding and decoding device, the enigma machine. The machine was created by german inventor, Arthur Scherbius. He originally designed the machine to be a civilian cypher and then it was adapted for military use by the german army during ww2. Scherbius was trained as a mechanical engineer in Munich in the 1920's. He holds several patents for other coding devices, none of which are as successful as the enigma machine. The machine works by doing a cypher replacement to code a message, the cypher codes were changed every so often so the machine could be programed to do the replacements. The enigma machine was used through ww2 even after the allies broke the code because the german navy lost track of several machines.
